Works in Progress: Session #2 - Academic Insecurity

This event is a part of Works In Progress, a monthly workshop series by the Research Cluster for the Study of Race and Inequality for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to present their works in progress and receive feedback from their peers.

This workshop discusses ways in which post-secondary institutions and academia as a whole offer few resolutions to scholars and students living in what I refer to as “voluntary” exile. At times, these institutions even aid in creating paths for individuals who are uncertain about their place in academia to an eventual involuntary return.

Facilitator Bio: Hui Bin Lin is a PhD student at the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies. Her areas of academic interest include: policing in totalitarian regimes, securitization, state violence, race and criminal justice, and ethnic relations in China. She is interested in questions of transfer of power from the military to police organizations under totalitarianism. Outside of her work, she is a baking connoisseur and a video gaming pro.
