Dear CrimSL community,
Friday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (also known as Orange Shirt Day), a Canadian statutory holiday. This day is meant to commemorate and raise awareness surrounding the residential schools that tragically impacted the First Nations community and culture. This date honours the survivors, the children, and the communities, and aims to raise awareness surrounding the inter-generational trauma that is the legacy of residential schools.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action (as well as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry Calls to Justice) draw our attention to the injustices of our justice system. As those who study, learn, research and teach about law, society, crime and justice, we at CrimSL also bear a responsibility to educate ourselves and one another about the historic and contemporary entanglement of our legal system in processes and practices of colonialism, subordination, and decimation. And as our 2021/22 Edwards Memorial Lecturer, Val Napoleon, taught (or reminded) us, there is also so much learn about and from Indigenous legal orders, knowledge and method that is vital to repairing, creating, and sustaining relationships of justice in the classroom, among individuals and collectivities, and between the state and Indigenous peoples.
There are many events taking place at the University of Toronto and the city of Toronto in the days leading to and following the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and I hope they inspire you to participate.
Regards,
Audrey Macklin
