Biography
Mayana C. Slobodian is Métis-settler with Red River Métis and Ukrainian heritage, born in Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw territory and living in lək̓ʷəŋən territory. Mayana is a writer and researcher who works with First Nations to rematriate research from colonial archives and facilitate the reclamation of land and knowledge. Her dissertation, “Fixing Canada: Royal Commissions & the Scandal of Settler Colonialism” looks at the use of royal commission in Indigenous-State relations in Canada, with a focus on consent, public opinion, and newspaper coverage of Indigenous political activism.
