The CrimSL Research Cluster for the Study of Racism and Inequality (CSRI) is happy to announce that doctoral students Diego Tuesta, Joana Jabson, and Sara Ali have agreed to serve on its 2024-2025 advisory committee.
Nominations were received between June and August 2024 for three student positions on the committee.
Diego, Joana, and Sara bring an abundant scope of knowledge and experience which will be pivotal in shaping the development of CSRI as it enters its fifth year.
The new advisory committee members introduce themselves below.
Diego Tuesta
I’m a punishment and society researcher. I study prosecutorial discretion to understand the reproduction of penal trends in various sociolegal settings. I have studied the criminalization of human trafficking, illicit drug trade, and mining protests in Peru. My career as a sociologist and criminologist includes public service for criminal justice agencies, consultancies both nationally and internationally, and work as an instructor of social theory and criminology courses.
Joana Jabson
I am passionate about bridging the gap and inequalities that exists and manifests within racialized and underprivileged groups. My research interests involve understanding how punishment, systemic racism, violence and other forms of structural inequality still exists and manifests through various institutions and policy practices. I am dedicated in bringing people together to help shape and reach the Cluster’s goals.
Sara Ali
I am a Black, queer scholar whose primary research interest lies in examining how Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) can be reconceptualized in a way that can be applied beyond organizational settings, and to foster effective methods of coexistence. My work uses gender identity as a point of departure for exploring the mechanisms that facilitate forms of belonging and identity negotiation that go beyond inclusion.
Working closely with faculty members Beatrice Jauregui, Gail Super, and Julius Haag, CSRI looks forward to expanding its programming, creating fundraising structures, and building partnerships - beyond CrimSL - in line with its vision statement and strategic plan.
